The Importance of Change

August 14, 2008 Leave a comment

Today I received an e-mail from a young woman that is doing everything she can to achieve the body she can be proud of. She is diligently eating healthy, watching what she is eating, doing cardio and resistance training. She has been consistently working very hard to achieve her goals, only to be frustrated that its just not happening!

Most people know that change is important to keep from reaching a plateau. What a nasty word that is when it comes to weight loss/Muscle gain. Resistance training will never be as tough as when you first started, but it should not get easy nor be the same EVERY time that you lift. What do you change? Sets, Reps, rest periods, weight and even the exercise. Why? Think your the only one bored with your routine? So is your body! It has it all figured out, and it likes a challenge!

Cardio also goes in this category. Cardio is a shortened word for Cardiorespiratory activity. It works your heart, lungs and whole sensory system. The longer and more consistent you have been doing the treadmill, elliptical or whatever your choice is, the more adapt your body becomes. Therefore it requires change also. Are you in the category of wanting to gain muscle? Cardio is still important for you as well. Remember, the goal is not only to look great but to be HEALTHY!

Nutrition, yep you guessed it! It has to change too! The more active you are, the more your body needs to do it’s “To do list” of things to keep you alive and kicking. Started running more? Your Carbohydrates need to change. Started Lifting  more weight? You might have to up your calories and be sure that you are getting enough non-essential Amino Acids (also known as the building blocks of muscle). Feeling hungry all the time? You might not be getting enough Fat

These are all important keys to keep you headed to your goals and keep it exciting! Don’t get frustrated, change takes one step at a time.
