Time to find YOUR inner confidence!
When I begin with a new client, I always see their potential. The goals that we have set, and where they are wanting to go. I am not only there as a guide to keep them on the right path, but to help them see what I see. I frequently see the look of desperation/concern about the upcoming exercise. And, I usually see it again when it becomes the second time around, “Again, really?”.
A few years back, as I was on my own path to change and finding my inner greatness, I found this story about a boy in his teens looking up to the, “Big guy” in the gym (Yes, a Bodybuilder, stay with me here folks), he went to the man and asked if he could teach him everything he knows so that he may also get to be big like him. They guy (We will call him OX), told the kid to go away, “I have been asked that question before, and have attempted to help others in the past only for them to not be serious. ”
The kid (We will call him, Joey) exclaimed, “No! I am serious, I want to learn everything you know, I will do anything you tell me!”.
Ox hearing the desperation in his voice, and possible seriousness, “Anything? Really? Anything I tell you to get you where you want you will follow through? I am not wanting to waste my time again!”
Joey responded, “Yes, what do I need to do?”
OX replied, “Meet me here tomorrow morning at 5 A.M. Joey thought to himself that 5 A.M. was awfully early and can’t greatness start a little later? It was summer vacation!
“Yeah, I will be here at 5 A.M.” Joey responded, but trying to sound excited about what he may learn tomorrow.
The next morning, bright and early, Joey shows up (A little sleepy and maybe wishing that he had stayed in bed). “OK boss. I am ready to learn!”
OX smiled, “Great! I want you to do 100 pull-ups.”
“Huh? I can only do like 10, maybe 15 on a good day.”, Joey was really confused what this had to do with getting big.
“I guess your not serious then.”, OX shrugged, then began to walk away.
“NO, wait! OK, I will try to do 100 pull-ups.. “, Joey hopped up and grabbed the pull-up bar. As he began, he knocked out 10 then 15, then it started to slow. He was beginning to think that 100 was not ever going to happen today.
“Turn off your brain and your negative thinking. Let your muscles do the thinking and the work. You can do 100. “, OX chimed in to keep Joey focused. Finally, Joey finished and managed to finish 100 pull-ups. “Now, I know that you are serious and that you are willing to learn. Until you began to shut off your brain and let you muscles do the thinking, you were never going to finish those pull-ups. Because you didn’t think that you can. Now, you can see your true potential”
Joey smiled, because now he learned and he accomplished something he didn’t think was ever possible. Today he conquered himself!
The moral of the story is, even if you seem to be at incredible odds, if you put your mind to it you can achieve anything that you believe that you can do. Even if it sounds impossible. Shut off your brain, and go forth and conquer!
Hello,
I liked your article. I read your bio and appreciate your enthusiasm and work ethic. I had breast cancer and went through the chemo and radiation about a year or so ago, during which time I was on steroids among many other pills ! Yuk, it sucks. Anyway, I ate like a pig, ended up weighing in at about 200 lbs myself. Once my chemo and radiation was done I decided to do what had to be done to get back down to my usual 140 lbs., I’ve achieved that and have done well maintaining it. You’re right, you CAN do whatever you put your mind to !
God bless,
Meredith – RNC
Meredith-
Congratulations on beating Breast Cancer and getting back to where you feel comfortable! I love to hear other peoples stories to their own paths to greatness. Meredith, you show that there is no excuse not to reach your goals. Bravo!
